Olive Oil Museum

The oil press from rural craftsmanship to the dawn of the industrial technology: this is the main theme of the MUSEUM OF OLIVE OIL established by Umberto Turri in the spring of 1988. The company business, not to speak of the first initiative of its kind in Italy, receives an average of 50.000 visitors per year. It's an exhibition, unique in its kind, that wants to provide an account of a production system that has involved the rural population for over a millennium. It is also the history of an environment devoid of equipment and scientific knowledge, that was measured for centuries by the urgent need to extract a food of primary importance from its precious fruit.


The journey winds around the reality of a static and unchanging technology to reach, at the beginning of the 20th Century, the acquisition of the opportunities provided by the rising of the mechanical industry. Antique and rare instruments used in oil mills from 18th Century up until the beginning of the 20th Century are exhibited, as well as accessories and equipment used in the various eras. An imposing lever press made from oak wood, a water driven wheel mill (perfectly functioning) and other original examples of wooden and iron presses stands out amongst the rest. A special section tells the tale of the cultivation of the olives and the production of the oil by means of educational panels and videos. The Museum of Olive Oil, has also aroused interested from the mass media: numerous articles and television reports have made the museum well known also in Europe.

Flavio Turri and his wife Liliana Martino are responsible for the development of the museum activities, and they have inherited the passion from Umberto further extending the expositive rooms.

Where to find the Museum
The museum and outlet are situated adjacent to our offices at Cisano di Bardolino, on the Garda highway (gardesana) in an easily recognisable position, a few kilometres from the Brennero motorway (Affi exit) and from the Milan-Venice motorway (Peschiera del Garda exit).
During the months of outstanding tourist flow the recommended motorway exit is: Affi or Verona nord.

Museum video guide
The Oil Museum in Cisano has renewed its audiovisual system which has illustrated the operation of the displayed equipment to visitors for over twenty years. Two monitors enable the vision of the activities relating to oil production and in a dedicated room where you can watch the projection of the new documentary published by the museum and entitled The History of Olive Oil. The film was directed by Gianluigi Miele and produced by the Oil Museum – Mill Cisano.
The film starts with an introduction to the cultivation of olives that took place in the Greek colonies in Sicily during the VII century a.c. and illustrates the propagation of their cultivation in the Mediterranean up until their arrival, which most probably took place with the Romans on the shores of Lake Garda. To shoot the film it was necessary therefore to follow the same path that the olives took starting on a journey from the ruins of Selinunte and Siracusa where 2700 years ago the first plants arrived from Greece.

From Sicily the journey continued towards Rome where during the centuries under the Empire the oil was diffused to the conquered territories and imposed, especially from Spain, a duty in oil that was indispensable for the alimentation of the population of Rome. The consumption of oil was so large that in Rome there is a hill in the Testaccio quarter, which is made up entirely of the remains of oil amphora. There is also documentation of the current DOP oil production from Garda which takes place using the modern techniques of centrifugation, which is now essential to create a product of high quality. “The reactions from the public are extremely positive”, comments Flavio Turri the museum owner “which consists mainly of foreigners visiting from Northern European countries where olive oil consumption is still limited”.
The film in DVD format lasts for approx. 30 minutes and has been translated into English, French and German.
